Cielo Dorado being a VFR airport with a two light PAPI, or “Precision Approach Path Indicator” used only as an aid to establish a standard glide slope on an approach to Runway 22. Transmit 3 quick times on 122.9 to turn the R/W & PAPI lights on. The pilot in command is always responsible to maintain VFR flight conditions, and again if this PAPI is used as a pilots aid to establish the glide slope, is always the pilot’s responsibility to maintain terrain clearance regardless of the PAPI.

Safety is our highest priority and using standard operating procedures at a VFR airport will greatly increase this factor and help keep all of us on the side of safety. Runway 22 is the Calm Wind Runway for a couple of reasons. The PAPI was established on 22 because it is the calm wind runway. All take off and landings should be runway 22 for noise sensitive reasons such as the city of Canutillo and the church that is located in that town. Runway 22 should be used unless the wind is favoring runway 4. A calm wind runway is the runway of choice if the winds are calm, or light and variable. The predominant winds at Cielo Dorado are easterly, in other words blowing from the west to the east a majority of the time, is another reason for the PAPI on 22. The CATF of 122.72 or in the latest radios 122.725 is of great safety. Using the CATF to communicate our intentions and positions to each other, so as to keep the flow of take offs and landings on the same runway.
